Of all the blessings in this world, music is truly a “Gift of Joy” that touches all beings. I feel particularly blessed in that its magical touch came to me in a most unusual and wondrous way. It all began while I was attending an Animal Communication workshop at Spring Farm CARES, an animal sanctuary and center for the teaching of interspecies communication. I had agreed to accompany my wife to these workshops, even though as an engineer I was fairly skeptical about this concept of telepathic communication. My doubts rapidly diminished as the workshops proceeded. During one of the practice sessions I worked with Monica, an Afghan hound living at Spring Farm. She is a beautiful old soul, with a fantastic and surprising sarcastic edge. Monica and I had a very moving conversation, during which she informed me that not only was it time that I talked to a dog around there, but also that I needed to listen better. Perhaps most poignant in light of later events were her comments that "love is important" and that "Spring Farm is important."

After we talked, I wandered out into the common area and sat down at their beautiful concert grand piano. To my everlasting astonishment, I immediately played something I never heard and clearly never played before. For that matter, before that moment I had never composed any music. At most, I had improvised off someone else’s creations. Yet, here I had just played a completely new composition. I thought back over what had just happened and I realized as I sat down, I heard “play C” in my head. So I did. Suddenly a melody started, and I heard, “now G” and so on. I reached just a little further inside and there was Monica with that sarcastic grin just beaming for all she was worth. I said telepathically, “That was you, wasn’t it?” She said, “Of course!” I played it again and it got even better.

On the third round, Dawn Hayman, the animal communication workshop leader came into the room and suddenly I was sharing this incredible moment with others. What a life-changing event. I couldn’t ignore the reality of what had just happened to me. I had to lay aside my innate skepticism and learn to trust and believe that there are things in this life that simply can’t be explained, but nonetheless are real. However, I still wondered, “Why me?” Why was I given this wonderful gift? Monica answered that question with a simple, “Why not you?” Later that day, the notion that I might one day record this song was mentioned. I had no idea if the creative flow would keep coming, but I knew if it did, I should at least “take a shot” at a recording, with Spring Farm as a beneficiary. After all, it all began with Monica and the words “Spring Farm is important.”

As we neared completion of this recording my wife, Jac, asked Monica if she had anything she wanted to share with people about the music. Monica said, “It’s my gift. Music is the universal language. It is something to be shared. That’s how the joy will be spread across the world. Music is the one thing that can reach all beings. It’s a primordial love…transcending all time.” Jac then asked, “Why do you want to do this for all of us?” In classic fashion Monica simply replied, “Because I can.” And, after a short pause, “Isn’t that why all good should be done?”
